Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors, said on Monday that Tesla Motors would start producing its Model 3 car in the US in 2020.
The announcement came during a Q&A session at the New York Auto Show, and it comes as Tesla is already building the company’s Gigafactory in Nevada, which will eventually make batteries for all of Tesla’s vehicles.
Musk told reporters at the event that the Model 3 would be a Tesla model that “will be able to do something very different than the car that we’ve had before”.
In the interview, he also said that Tesla had built a prototype of its next-generation car, the Model X, and would soon unveil a full production model of the car.
Musk said that the Tesla Model S, which he first hinted at at the start of his Tesla Roadster, had been delayed from 2017 to 2020, but he did not elaborate.
Musk also said he was working with “all of the other people” on the Model S and Model X to make sure they would have a “really good product”.
The company plans to offer an electric version of the Model III in 2021, which Musk said would be the last of the line of cars.
In January 2020, Tesla announced a new model, the Gigafoundation, which it said would allow it to build “the next generation of the most affordable cars ever”.
Musk also promised that he would build a car for the first time in the 2020s, a car that would cost less than $50,000 and would be available “in 2020”.
It is not yet clear if Tesla is planning to sell cars in 2020, or whether it will make them available in 2021.
Elon Musk (@elonmusk) January 29, 2021 The Model 3 is expected to offer a range of 200 miles on a single charge, which is comparable to the range of the BMW i3 sedan.
However, the company said in a statement that the car’s battery pack would “provide an average of 50 miles of range per charge”.
In addition, it said the car would be “capable of going from 0 to 60mph in 5.8 seconds, and a range between 150 miles and 200 miles”.
Musk has also said Tesla would sell a range-extended version of its Model S in 2020 that would offer a 200-mile range and would cost $100,000.
This would come after the Model Y, which was sold in 2021 for $40,000 more than the Model 2.
Tesla said in 2020 it would offer the new Model 3 at a cost of $60,000, which would be less than the $80,000 that it was selling in 2020 for.
Tesla has also been trying to get customers to buy its cars in China.
A Chinese carmaker announced in December 2020 that it would build its first production car in 2020 with an electric range of up to 200 miles, but it later withdrew the order after the Chinese government announced plans to increase subsidies for electric vehicles.
Tesla will have to find other buyers to sell its cars there, and in the meantime, Musk has announced plans for a Tesla store in Shanghai, China’s largest city, that he hopes to open in 2020 or 2021.
It is also expected that Tesla will start selling its cars from 2019 onwards in China, which could mean it will be selling cars in Shanghai for the rest of the decade.
